Language, Literacy and Communication

Books form a central part of our activities. The child is encouraged to enjoy, respect and handle the wide range of books in the library. Pre-reading and pre-writing skills are introduced, together with name recognition. Nursery rhymes, music and poems help develop their communication skills.

There is free access to pencils, paper and the painting easel. Children are encouraged to listen and use language, extend their vocabulary, speak clearly and explore meanings of words and to use their imagination through role play and experiences. Letter sound and shape recognition is encouraged through activities and the "Jolly Phonics" scheme.
